Signs birth is getting close
- Looking for a quiet spot and starting to build a nest.
- Restless and pacing, or the opposite, becoming withdrawn.
- Appetite drops in the last 24 hours before birth.
- Mammary glands enlarge and milk may appear.
- In dogs, rectal body temperature can drop about 12 to 24 hours before labour.
When it is an emergency (dystocia)
If you see any of these signs, do not wait. Contact a vet as soon as possible.
- Strong, non-stop contractions for more than about 30 minutes with no baby delivered.
- More than about 2 hours pass between babies while the mother is still straining.
- Pregnancy passes the expected window (for example beyond about 67 days in cats or 68 to 70 days in dogs) with no sign of labour.
- Dark green, black, or bloody discharge appears before any baby is born.
- A baby is visibly stuck in the birth canal for more than a few minutes.
- The mother is very weak, trembling, collapsing, or clearly in pain.
