Pet Vaccination Guide

Pet Vaccination Guide — Cats, Dogs, and When to Booster

Vaccination is more than an annual shot. This page explains why vaccination matters, complete schedules for cats and dogs from young to adult, the difference between core and non-core vaccines, and 2026 cost ranges — compiled following WSAVA 2024 guidelines used by veterinarians worldwide, including Indonesia.

Why Vaccination Matters

Vaccination is the cheapest investment for your pet

Many new pet owners think vaccination is just "vet formality". Yet vaccines prevent diseases that still actively circulate in Jakarta and Jabodetabek today — rabies in dogs and cats which is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, parvovirus in puppies which kills within days, panleukopenia in kittens which spreads rapidly in multi-pet households.

Three reasons why vaccination is one of the most valuable clinical decisions:

The most widely referenced global vaccination guideline is the WSAVA Vaccination Guidelines (2024 update). Compiled by a panel of experts from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and regularly updated to reflect the latest research on immunity duration, core vs non-core classification, and special protocols. This page summarizes the practical implications for pet owners in Indonesia.

Cat Vaccines

Cat vaccines — schedule from kitten to adult

Cats have three major vaccination phases: kitten series, first adult booster, then annual boosters for life.

Kitten phase (6–16 weeks)

Maternal antibodies from the queen's milk protect kittens in the early weeks, but they can also neutralize a vaccine given too early. That's why kitten vaccines are given in a series with 3–4 week intervals — a window strategy ensuring at least one shot hits the right moment when maternal antibodies have declined.

For high-risk environments (multi-cat household, frequent new cat introductions, history of panleukopenia in the area), WSAVA 2024 suggests extending the series to 20 weeks with boosters every 2–3 weeks.

First adult booster (1 year old)

One year after the kitten series completes, cats get their first Tricat + Rabies adult booster. This booster is crucial — many cats fail long-term protection because owners skip the year-one booster.

Annual boosters (1+ years)

Tricat and Rabies boosters every year, in the same month to make it easier to remember. For senior cats (7+ years), the vet usually also checks general condition during the visit.

Dog Vaccines

Dog vaccines — schedule from puppy to adult

Dogs follow a similar principle to cats — a puppy series, first adult booster, then annual boosters — but with different vaccine combinations.

Puppy phase (6–16 weeks)

Same as kittens, the 3–4 week interval between boosters ensures at least one shot hits the moment when maternal antibodies have sufficiently declined.

First adult booster (1 year old)

First DHPP + Lepto + Rabies booster one year after the puppy series. Without this booster, puppy protection can drop and the dog becomes vulnerable again.

Cat vs Dog

Key differences between cat and dog vaccines

Owners with both cats and dogs often wonder — can the schedules be the same? Short answer: timing principle is similar, but vaccine types differ.

If you have both cats and dogs in one household, Prabasavet partner vets can vaccinate both in a single home visit — more efficient, and the visit fee is not multiplied by the number of animals.

Core vs Non-Core

Core vs non-core vaccines (WSAVA 2024)

WSAVA divides vaccines into two categories:

Core cat vaccines (WSAVA 2024)

Core dog vaccines (WSAVA 2024)

Non-core vaccines

In the Indonesian context, some vaccines classified as non-core in international guidelines (e.g., Lepto in dogs) are treated almost as core by local vets due to high exposure risk. Consult your vet for considerations specific to your home environment.

Vaccine Cost

2026 vaccine cost ranges

Vaccine cost in Jabodetabek consists of two components: vaccine price per dose + home visit fee (if applicable). 2026 ranges:

Cat vaccines (per dose, excluding visit fee)

Dog vaccines (per dose, excluding visit fee)

Home visit fees depend on distance and area. Because vaccine prices can vary by brand and stock availability, we always provide a total estimate upfront via WhatsApp before the visit. See our pricing page for the calculation framework.

For owners with 3+ pets, home visit is almost always more economical — the visit fee is not multiplied by the number of animals. One visit, all pets vaccinated.

How to Book

How to book a Prabasavet home visit vaccination

1

Send WhatsApp

Mention the pet type, age, vaccination history (if remembered), and your area. If you don't know which vaccine is needed, just say "want vaccination consultation" — our team will help.

2

Cost estimate & schedule

Our team responds with a total cost estimate (vaccine + visit fee) and schedule options with a partner vet in your area. Confirm what works for you.

3

Vet visits your home

The vet first checks the pet's condition — no fever, no diarrhea, fit. If anything needs to be postponed, the vet explains why. If fit, the vaccine is administered + vaccination record updated.

4

Monitor 24 hours

Most pets are fine. Sleepiness, mild fever, reduced appetite for 24–48 hours is normal. Serious reactions (facial swelling, severe itching, repeated vomiting) are rare but require immediate contact with us or the nearest 24-hour clinic.

FAQ

Common questions about pet vaccination

My adult pet has never been vaccinated — is it still possible?

Yes. For adult cats or dogs that have never been vaccinated, WSAVA 2024 recommends 2 core vaccine shots (MLV) spaced 2–4 weeks apart, then annual boosters. For rabies, 1 protective shot, then annual boosters. Consult your vet — the final protocol may differ depending on the vaccine type available.

If I missed the annual booster for 2–3 years, must I restart from scratch?

For pets that previously completed the kitten or puppy series but missed the booster — even more than 3 years — WSAVA 2024 states that 1 MLV (modified live virus) booster dose is sufficient. Most Tricat/DHPP vaccines used in Indonesia are MLV. For inactivated vaccines (some Lepto or inactivated Rabies), the vet may recommend 2 doses spaced 3–4 weeks apart.

Do indoor pets that never go outside still need vaccination?

Yes. Viruses like panleukopenia and parvovirus can be carried on your shoes, bag, or clothes from outside. Pets always indoors are still at risk. Plus, if you ever need to use a pet hotel, move, or have an emergency clinic visit, a vaccination record is usually required.

Can multiple vaccines be combined in one visit?

Yes. Shots at different body locations (e.g., Tricat in right scruff, Rabies in left thigh). Healthy pets usually tolerate well. For small, senior, or vaccine-reactive pets, the vet may space them 1–2 weeks apart for safety. Discuss with your vet.

What vaccine side effects are normal vs need immediate vet attention?

Normal: sleepiness, mild fever, reduced appetite for 24–48 hours, mild swelling at injection site. Need immediate vet attention: facial swelling, severe itching, repeated vomiting, extreme lethargy, breathing difficulty, or fainting. Serious reactions are rare but need fast response.

Does Prabasavet vaccinate exotic pets (rabbits, hamsters, reptiles)?

For rabbits, vaccines available in Indonesia are still limited — we can help consult whether they are suitable. Hamsters, sugar gliders, and reptiles generally don't have routine vaccination protocols. More relevant for exotic pets are routine health checks and early symptom detection. Contact us via WhatsApp for specific consultation.
